How to optimize your website for AI search (GEO): a 2026 playbook
GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) done right: citable passages, brand mentions, freshness and schema. How AI Overviews, ChatGPT and Perplexity choose sources.

Short answer
Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of making your website the source an AI answer cites. Google frames it as SEO fundamentals applied to AI search: the same content quality, structure and authority that win rankings also win citations in AI Overviews. The evidence points to a few levers that matter most. Brand mentions correlate roughly 3x more strongly with AI citations than backlinks do. Citable passages, self-contained answers of roughly 134 to 167 words, get extracted into AI answers, with nearly half of citations coming from the first 30% of a page. Freshness matters: content updated within three months is about 3x more likely to be cited, and pages left stale for six months lose citation eligibility. Content with images and structure sees higher selection rates. Finally, only about 11% of domains are cited by both ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews, so the same content can behave very differently across AI surfaces.
What GEO is, and what it isn't
Google's own position is that optimizing for generative AI search is still SEO. The same fundamentals, clear answers, good structure, authority and freshness, are what AI systems use to choose sources. GEO is not a separate dark-art discipline. It is making your content quotable, current and credible enough that an AI answering a question picks you over a competitor.
What the evidence says drives AI citations
| Signal | Impact on AI visibility |
|---|---|
| Brand mentions (social, YouTube, press) | ~3x stronger correlation than backlinks |
| Citable, self-contained answer passages | ~44% of citations come from the first 30% of a page |
| Content freshness (<3 months) | ~3x more likely to be cited |
| Multi-modal content (images, structure) | ~156% higher selection rate |
| Cross-platform overlap (ChatGPT + Google AIO) | Only ~11% of domains cited by both |
Write self-contained answer blocks
AI systems extract passages, not whole pages. The single biggest change is to put a direct, self-contained answer at the top of the page, 134 to 167 words that define or answer the question and can stand alone. Structure the rest with question-based headings so each section is itself a mini-answer.
Front-load the answer
A big share of AI citations come from the first 30% of a page. Do not bury the answer below an introduction, a hero image and a table of contents. State it in the first 40 to 60 words, then expand.
Keep content fresh
Pages untouched for six months lose citation eligibility. A scheduled refresh program, updating stats, dates and examples quarterly, is one of the cheapest ways to stay inside AI answers, and it aligns with what Google's AI search rewards.
Make the technical layer AI-friendly
- Server-side rendering. AI crawlers do not execute JavaScript; content must exist in the raw HTML.
- Allow AI crawlers. Permit GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ClaudeBot and PerplexityBot in robots.txt.
- Schema. Person, Organization, Article and FAQ structured data help machines understand entities and authorship.
- Author bylines and dates. Named authors with credentials and visible publication dates are strong authority signals.
On llms.txt: it is fine to keep for non-Google AI services, but Google states it ignores llms.txt for search and AI features. Treat it as optional, not a ranking lever.
AI surfaces pick sources differently
Google AI Overviews cite pages that already rank well. Google AI Mode draws from a broader pool where freshness and entity authority matter more than position. ChatGPT leans on Wikipedia and Reddit. Perplexity favors community validation. Practically, build an entity on LinkedIn, YouTube and communities, keep content fresh, and write answer blocks. The same work serves all surfaces.
Your GEO checklist
- Direct answer in the first 40 to 60 words.
- Self-contained 134 to 167 word answer blocks per topic.
- Question-based H2 headings.
- Named author, credentials, publication and update dates.
- Fresh content on a quarterly refresh schedule.
- AI crawlers allowed; server-side rendering; schema present.
- Brand presence on LinkedIn, YouTube and communities.
